Tender, moist, full of texture, flavorful, and faintly “fishy” vegan crab cakes. They are incredibly simple to create and they taste exactly like the real thing!
Ingredients
For the Vegan Crab Cakes
- 1 14-ounce (400g) can of heart of palm, drained and finely chopped
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free breadcrumbs for a gluten-free option)
- 1/4 cup vegan mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup finely chopped red bell pepper
- 2 green onions, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon Old Bay seasoning (or a combination of paprika, garlic powder, and celery salt)
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 2-3 tablespoons cooking oil for frying
For the Vegan Remoulade Sauce
- 1/2 cup vegan mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon capers, minced
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon sweet pickle relish
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Prepare the Vegan Crab Cakes: a. In a large mixing bowl, combine the chopped heart of palm, breadcrumbs, vegan mayonnaise, red bell pepper, green onions, Old Bay seasoning, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. b. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly combined. The mixture should stick together but not be too wet. Add more breadcrumbs if necessary. c. Form the mixture into 4-6 patties, depending on your preferred size.
2. Cook the Vegan Crab Cakes: a. Heat 2-3 tablespoons of cooking oil in a skillet over medium heat. b. Carefully place the vegan crab cake patties in the skillet and cook until they are golden brown and crispy on each side, about 3-4 minutes per side. c. Remove the cooked vegan crab cakes from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil.
3. Prepare the Vegan Remoulade Sauce (optional): a. In a small bowl, whisk together the vegan mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, minced capers, minced garlic, sweet pickle relish, paprika, salt, and black pepper. b. Adjust the seasonings to taste.
4. Serve: a. Serve the Vegan Crab Cakes hot with a side of the Vegan Remoulade Sauce, if desired.
