It’s definitely difficult to imitate fish. It’s challenging because of the smell, consistency, and shape! You’ll be amazed by this vegan fish sandwich with homemade vegan tartar! No tofu is required, and there is no oil at all.
Ingredients
- 1 block of extra-firm tofu
- 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (ensure they’re vegan)
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Vegan Fish Sandwich Ingredients:
- Vegan fish sticks (from the recipe above)
- 4 burger buns (whole wheat or vegan options)
- Lettuce leaves
- Sliced tomatoes
- Sliced red onions
- Vegan tartar sauce (store-bought or homemade)
Instructions
- Start by pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture. Place the tofu block on a plate lined with paper towels, cover with more paper towels, and put a heavy object on top (such as a cast-iron skillet). Let it press for about 20-30 minutes.
- In the meantime, prepare the coating mixture. In a shallow bowl, combine nutritional yeast, breadcrumbs, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
- Once the tofu is pressed, cut it into sticks resembling fish sticks.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer over medium heat.
- Take each tofu stick and coat it with the breadcrumb mixture, pressing it gently to adhere.
- Fry the coated tofu sticks in the hot oil until golden brown and crispy. This usually takes about 3-4 minutes per side. Transfer the cooked fish sticks to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Assemble the vegan fish sandwich by spreading tartar sauce on both sides of the burger buns. Add lettuce leaves, sliced tomatoes, red onions, and several vegan fish sticks.
- Serve the vegan fish sandwich immediately with your choice of side dishes.
